Flashpoint: Total War Team Game – October War – Fate of a Nation
Location: The Royal Canadian Legion Dieppe Café in Regina Saskatchewan

Our group - the Flames of War Regina Rifles, FRR, has events every month and sometimes more than once a month. And, every second month we have a large team game. In October appropriately enough we held our Fate of a Nation – October War Total War Team Battle!
Normally we have at least six players for our Arab-Israeli Wars games but we were short two IDF; leaving Alex all alone in the desert. So, Jace, with poise, swapped out his Egyptian T54s to an IDF Tiran 5 mindset. Lance (me) and Sean would have to push forward without the support of our Egyptian ally. Our companies are listed below:

Sean and I, as the Arab defenders, set up first as per Total War - Total Victory Scenario; with a few modifications – an extra objective in each zone and the objectives in the centre table area and the length of the table used instead of the width (https://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=4053). The gaming area was 12’ by 4’. Sean placed his artillery in the back and prepared all his mobile forces to charge forward on the right side. Likewise my artillery deployed in the back and I deployed my infantry on the left side with my barb wire working to slow the enemy as much as my infantry. I also had two minefields one of which I placed near the middle point to hopefully delay the IDF from the centre objective the other I placed in a shrub which I knew my opponent would head towards. Alex deployed opposite Sean and I of course drew Jace. Alex with his Shermans were afforded the most cover while Jace’s eleven Tiran 5s would have sparse terrain area to advance from but more cover in the centre to advance to.

With the roll off won by Alex and Jace - the IDF had the advantage of the attackers first turn, minus air and artillery. They poured out of their deployment area and streaked to the centre objectives. In large games the middle objectives are the most crucial as any objectives that are close to your lines are almost always easily locked down - it is usually the very centre stage that gets the most units destroyed and where the action is. With Sean and I doing our best to react to the IDF’s bold movement Sean rolled forward while I became snared in a trap of my own making – my barb wire stopped most of my Centurions from moving. The Cross checks were not difficult but beyond my dice for the few critical and crucial first few turns. During the second turn the IDF sent their planes in to crush the Jordanians – but the deployment of the Dusters managed to rip the aircraft out of the sky. And, while it was a relief for the Jordanians not to have to deal with anymore aircraft strikes the IDF still had a lot of tanks. Moreover, those IDF tanks began the slow grinding down of the Arab tanks. The Arabs quickly responded with multiple smoke screens for the next few turns in order to keep the battle of attrition to a minimum and move their units into better positions. However, once the smoke rounds were depleted the IDF better skills and easier target acquisitions began to slowly and steadily take their toll on the Jordanians. Yet, it was a very close game for the most part as the following scoring shows:

Score per round:
Turn #1 – no score
Turn #2 IDF 3 versus Jordan 3
Turn #3 IDF 6 versus Jordan 7
Turn #4 IDF 10 versus Jordan 12
Turn #5 IDF 18 versus Jordan 16
Turn #6 IDF 24 versus Jordan 21
Turn #7 IDF 29 versus Jordan 25

Lance’s conclusion and list for May:
I needed more tanks! Jace actually out shot me with a reduced ROF and less tanks. I also stymied myself with my own barb wire that my Centurions had to drive through = do not take barb wire; easy fix! Also, I was unimpressed with the reroll option for my 155mms so they will be reduced but sill included.
