Hi all,

The June Strategy Saturday edition is happening next weekend. The game that will be featured is 1775: Rebellion which allows players to relive the battle for American independence from the British Empire. It is an award winning design that is easy to get into without the complexity of traditional war games. A great opportunity for people who have been unsure of this genre to try a military themed game and be introduced to history at the same time.

!!! If you have a game you'd like to play and draw some attention to, feel free to volunteer for future Feature Game slots. Just drop me a note and I'll see if we can't get your game into the spotlight.

Strategy Saturday will be at Argyle Road Baptist Church (3510 Argyle Rd) from 7pm to midnight.  As usual we'll have our snack counter open so feel free to contribute a drink or something to munch on.  And feel free to bring along friends (and to forward this invite).

Hope you'll be there,

Allan

Not playing it/haven't played it. I'd like to sometime ... but right now I'm swamped with other chores/interests. I still have my armies and have zero plans to ditch them. So that's where I'm at right now.

Hey there,

The second Saturday of May is this happening this weekend so that means Strategy Saturday. The feature game will be an older winner of the Spiel des Jahres award - Elfenland. This game is designed by Alan R. Moon who is best known for creating the wildly successful Ticket to Ride game (another Spiel des Jahres winner).  In Elfenland players seek to visit a as many cities and settlements in the land of the elves as possible in just 4 turns. It's a light family friendly game that plays up to 6. It was brought back into reprint a few years ago and redone as Elfenroads which includes the original game plus a couple of additional expansions.

Hi everyone,

Winter will soon be gone ... maybe. Unfortunately it doesn't have a certifiable end date that we can mark on our calendar with assured anticipation. To make up for it, we can mark on our calendar the second Saturday of each month in anticipation of an evening of gaming.

Two games will be featured for this weekend's Strategy Saturday. The first will be Railways of Nippon. This is the classic game of "Railways of the World" (originally released as "Railroad Tycoon") set in the country of Japan. The game takes place during Japan's rapid industrial growth during the Meiji era, where you take the role of one of the entrepreneurial railroad barons of that time. Cory will be bringing this game; he also has an alternative map for Canada if players prefer something closer to home.
The second game is going to be Axis and Allies Anniversary Edition. Since 1981 Axis and Allies has been one of the most successful war games ever released. The game allows player to test their wit and luck in this re-enactment of WWII to see if they can change or duplicate the results of this epic historical conflict. This edition of the game introduces the 3rd Axis power (Italy) as well a new units and a redesigned world map. If you're interested in this game, check out the rules in the links below so that we can dive right into game play.

Hi everyone,

In March I like to have a game that is somehow tied to the theme of Mars. Most years this means that the game is connected to the aspect of the Roman god of war and so has a military theme. However, this year the focus will be on Mars the planet. For those who do enjoy a battle game you can look forward to April when the plan is to play Axis and Allies 50th Anniversary edition (of course you are still welcome bring and play a war-themed game this month as well). But more on March's feature game ....

The Feature Game will be Terraforming Mars. It's a game set 400 years from now when corporations are seeking to alter the very nature of the red planet to allow humanity to sustain itself on a second terra. It is up to you to guide your corporation's contribution in this most monumental project and prove that your organization will have the most influential innovations for the greatest impact on the future of our race. Terraforming Mars is one of the most celebrated games released in 2016 was nominated for a number of awards. Check it out:

Hi all,

I hope that February finds you doing well. For me, it finds 'me busy with life and work. I'm sure you've all have those moments when life is a treadmill and you're just running to keep up. And since this 'treadmill' doesn't stop, we run.

February is also the month that we have a Family Day holiday - a chance to step off the treadmill for a moment and appreciate that life is good because of the people around us. For the Feature Game this month, I'm going to keep it simple with a game that is fun and very family friendly: Qwirkle. If you've never played Qwirkle, you need to give it a try. Its a simple tile laying game in the spirit of Scrabble but using shapes and colours instead of letters. Definitely a game that can be played and enjoyed with all ages.

Hi all,

Welcome to the new year! Hope that the holidays were a good time for you and your family. Now with the holiday season behind us (and hopefully that nasty cold weather with it), we're back at the regular pace of life - which gladly includes Strategy Saturday!

With a new year why not feature a new game to my collection? "Raiders of the North Sea" did very well on KickStarter and was also short-listed for the prestigious 2017 Kennerspiel des Jahres award. This is a worker placement game in which players are seeking to gather Viking glory and renown by ... surprise! ... raiding and plundering.
