Happy New Year everyone,

I hope that 2019 finds you all well. Last year is now done and finished and along with it all the good (and not so good) memories and experiences. The great thing is that with the start of a new year that, in addition to completely new experiences, its all open to restarts, renews, or simply continuing on with what was good from the last 12 months.

So on that note, the feature game for January will be Brass: Birmingham. This is a new game to my collection and a follow-up to the original Brass: Lancashire (one of my favourite games). Brass: Birmingham tells the story of competing entrepreneurs in Birmingham and the surrounding area during England's Industrial Revolution. In the game players will seek to expand their industrial empire by establishing canals and rails, while building and developing various industries such as Cotton Mills, Coal Mines, Iron Works, Manufacturers, Potteries, and Breweries.

!!!If you have a game you'd like to play and draw some attention to, feel free to volunteer for future Feature Game slots. Just drop me a note and I'll see if we can't get your game in the spotlight.

Strategy Saturday will be at Argyle Road Baptist Church (3510 Argyle Rd) from 7pm to midnight.  As usual we'll have our snack counter open so feel free to contribute a drink or something to munch on.  And feel free to bring along friends (and to forward this invite).

Hope you'll be there,

Allan

Hey all,

A reminder to take note of beginning of 2019 dates for Strategy Saturday.  In January, February, March Strategy Saturdays will be on the FIRST Saturdays. Come April I expect we will be able to return to the traditional second Saturday of the month. So I hope you all got that and don't inadvertently miss one of these game nights.

So last month we were going feature Great Western Trail and then Henning got sick at the last moment. Not a big deal, the evening went on just fine without them both. So this month we'll give Henning another crack at introducing Great Western Trail to potentially new players (like myself).  Great Western Trail is a recreation of ranching in the wild west of America in which players are trying to move cattle to market. Of course there are decisions to be made along the way and only the mostly discerning rancher will gain greater profits than his rivals.

Hey all,

Take note of this first bit. The winter dates of Strategy Saturday are going to change a bit. In November we'll be meeting on the FIRST Saturday. In December it will be the SECOND Saturday. And then in January, February, March it will be the FIRST Saturdays. Come April I expect we will be able to return to the traditional second Saturday of the month. So I hope you all got that and don't inadvertently miss one of these game nights.

This Saturday the game we will have featured is Great Western Trail. Currently this is one of Henning's favourite games and he has volunteered to teach it. This is a recreation of ranching in the wild west of America in which players are trying to move cattle to market. Of course there are decisions to be made along the way and only the mostly discerning rancher will gain greater profits than his rivals.

Hey all,

Hope you've all enjoyed Thanksgiving. It was nice to have the weather relent and give us nice fall days for the long weekend.

This Saturday the game we will have featured is Lords of Waterdeep. This an award winning game in which players take on the role of secret lords who are seeking to amass the greatest influence in the fantastical city of Waterdeep. Through worker placement players will send their agents throughout the city on quests, to recruit, and conduct intrigue. This game, though now an older release, is still highly rated.

Hey all,

Sorry for the later notice, but yes, this weekend is Strategy Saturday. A late notice is no reason to doubt it is still happening!

Last month I mentioned being torn on which game I should feature as I had just gotten some additions to my collection. So this month it is the newly updated Brass: Lancashire. Its an economic strategy game that tells the story of competing cotton entrepreneurs in Lancashire during the industrial revolution. To do this you must seek to develop, build, and establish your industries and network so that you can capitalize on the demand for iron, coal and cotton. This is a great game; it has been my favourite for sometime. If you've never tried it, you need to. It'll leave you wanting to play it all over again.

Hi all,

It's the halfway point of the summer and soon the harvest will be in full swing. In some places it has already started. On the edge of Moose Jaw I saw a field of lentils that had already been combined. That is much sooner than normal.

I have just recently gotten some new games in my collection. Actually, it would be more accurate to say I've updated some games in my collection. My KickStarter funded "Brass: Lancashire" and its sister "Brass: Birmingham" finally made it to my doorstep after a year of waiting. As well, I got two expansions for another game, "Raiders of the North Sea". So what to feature?

Well, I've decided that I'll first feature Raiders of the North Sea and its expansions: Fields of Fame and Hall of Heroes. In the game players will still need to impress the Chieftain by raiding unsuspecting settlements doing this by assembling a crew, collecting provisions and journeying north to plunder gold, iron and livestock. Additionally, players will now be able to access a mead hall (bottoms up!) and recruit more crew which they will need since the settlements they so eager raided previously are now under the protection of mighty defending jarls.

Hi all,

Most people are aware that each month I look to shine the spotlight on an individual game. This game is featured and is a great way to get a game to the table that I (or others) would like to have a go at. If you have a game that is in your collection, whether it be old or new, and have a hankering to play it, contact me and I'll see about helping you scratch that itch.

My itch for July is Founding Fathers. This game has such a unique theme. The game is about the creation of the American Constitution and the articles that were (and weren't) included in it. The goal of each player is to be the person who has been best able to influence the final draft of the this historically critical document. When I first saw this game I could hardly believe someone one would even consider this topic for a game, but the designers have come up with a really solid, enjoyable (even educational) game. Come on out and give it a try.
