Hi all,

I hope that February finds you doing well. For me, it finds 'me busy with life and work. I'm sure you've all have those moments when life is a treadmill and you're just running to keep up. And since this 'treadmill' doesn't stop, we run.

February is also the month that we have a Family Day holiday - a chance to step off the treadmill for a moment and appreciate that life is good because of the people around us. For the Feature Game this month, I'm going to keep it simple with a game that is fun and very family friendly: Qwirkle. If you've never played Qwirkle, you need to give it a try. Its a simple tile laying game in the spirit of Scrabble but using shapes and colours instead of letters. Definitely a game that can be played and enjoyed with all ages.

!!! If you have a game you'd like to play and draw some attention to, feel free to volunteer for future Feature Game slots. Just drop me a note and I'll see if we can't get your game in the spotlight.

Strategy Saturday will be at Argyle Road Baptist Church (3510 Argyle Rd) from 7pm to midnight.  As usual we'll have our snack counter open so feel free to contribute a drink or something to munch on.  And feel free to bring along friends (and to forward this invite).

Hope you'll be there,

Allan

Hi all,

Welcome to the new year! Hope that the holidays were a good time for you and your family. Now with the holiday season behind us (and hopefully that nasty cold weather with it), we're back at the regular pace of life - which gladly includes Strategy Saturday!

With a new year why not feature a new game to my collection? "Raiders of the North Sea" did very well on KickStarter and was also short-listed for the prestigious 2017 Kennerspiel des Jahres award. This is a worker placement game in which players are seeking to gather Viking glory and renown by ... surprise! ... raiding and plundering.

Hi all,

So this is a very quick turn around between gaming nights for Strategy Saturday. Just the way that the holidays shaped up this year has thrown things a bit off but I expect that in the new year things are going to settle back to the normal pattern of the second weekend of each month.

The Feature Game for December is going to be Clank! In Space!. In this game you and your compatriots are attempting to sneak on board an evil despot's spaceship and snatch his prized artifacts. But be careful not to make noise or else you'll attract his attention and fall into his nasty clutches. Or at the very least, hope that your buddy is noisier than you are! This game is a new take on the classic theme of exploring a dungeon with a team of adventurers for gold and glory.

Hello all,

Remembrance Day falls on the second Saturday this year and so Strategy Saturday will be pushed back one weekend to November 18th.

The Feature Game is going to be Village. Set in medieval Europe, players take control of a family and seek to direct its members' pursuit of careers that will bring fame, glory, and honour to the clan. Family members might work at becoming an friar, a public official, or even a traveling merchant. The challenge is for the members to attain a prominent stature before time runs out and they .... die. This game is a multiple award winner. Come on down and check it out.

Hi all,

You may have noticed that I haven't been posting the dates for Strategy Saturday as far in advance as I have in the past. I'm purposefully doing this in an attempt to be better at avoiding unforeseen scheduling conflicts. My goal is still to have the games night on the 2nd Saturday of the month. That said the tentative expectation is that November's date will be on the 18th and December's only two weeks later on the 2nd.  So there's a heads up for you all.

October's Strategy Saturday will be featuring the game Trickerion: Legends of Illusion. In this game players take on the roles of rival stage illusionists, each with their own strengths and characteristics. They are striving for fortune and fame in a competition hosted by a legendary magician, looking for a successor worthy of the mighty Trickerion Stone, which is fabled to grant supernatural power to its owner.

Hi All,

Labour Day is over and the world is right - the Riders vanquished the the Bombers ... and September's Strategy Saturday is this weekend.

The Feature Game is an older game but new to me. I've always been intrigue by Mystery of the Abbey and I was recently able to pick up a copy. In it players are seeking to solve a unsettling murder in a medieval Templar abbey. They must use their powers of deduction and intuition, supported by clever questioning, to uncover the guilty culprit. Think of it being a more sophisticated version of the classic game of Clue. This game has received excellent reviews so come on down and try your hand at some detective work.

Hi everyone,

Sorry this is a late email. Just finished holidays and I'm just now about to get back in the swing of things. So this month's note will be quick and sweet.

The Feature Game this Saturday is going to be Risk 2210. The classic game of Risk has been released in many cross-overs and themes over the years. This is the game that began it all. The future is grim and players have only 5 turns to muster their MODs (Machines of Destruction) and become the dominate leader of the earth and her moon and sea colonies. If you grew up playing Risk, you'll enjoy a trip down memory lane and the new twists that this version provides.

Hi everyone,

Welcome to July and the fantastic days of summer. However if history had taken a different turn, oh, say about 22 centuries earlier we would not be celebrating the month of July. No, it would have another name had the Punic Wars of antiquity turned out differently. The Punic Wars were between the cities of Rome and Carthage. Had Rome lost, no doubt its most famous citizen, Julius Caesar, would never had the opportunity to move through the pages of history and the month of July would not have received his name.

Hands in the Sea is a unique game that allows players to experience that first conflict between these two great ancient cities. It uses the mechanisms of deck building and card drafting to allow players to advance their faction's control of cities and towns in Sicily (the historical focus of this conflict) and the other major islands of the Western Mediterranean Sea. Players seek to build a deck that will enable them to battle, colonize, and conduct naval actions to achieve victory through a variety of paths such as having the most victory points or even capturing their opponent's capital.

Hands in the Sea is a game that is directly inspired by Martin Wallace's A Few Acres of Snow. Both games use much of the same concepts; if you've played "A Few Acres of Snow" you already have been introduced to 80% of the rules for "Hands in the Sea". These games are 2 player games and I don't usually feature 2 player games - I like the Feature Game to allow a number of participants. But we will have two copies of Hands in the Sea at Strategy Saturday as well as its inspiration, A Few Acres of Snow. So I encourage you to come down and try a new take on playing cards within a strategy games.
