Happy New Year all,

Welcome to 2011.  I hope you've all had a great holiday.  For me it has been a nice break of being with family and friends but now the New Year is here and it's back to reality - work and bills ... and Strategy Saturday!  Already the second weekend of the month is rushing in on us and it's time for January's games night.

If you have a game you'd like to teach others (maybe a Christmas gift, eh?) feel free to contact me and we'll see when it would work for you to do the Feature Game in the near future.

This month the Feature Game is In the Shadow of the Emperor.  It's game set in the late middle ages of Germany.  Players are seeking to establish dynastic families that will vie for control of the various political entities of the Holy Roman Empire with ultimate prize of sitting on the empire's throne.  This is a very cool game that has nobles and knights, princesses and bishops, political marriages and births, aging and death, all influencing the final outcome.

We'll be in the basement of Argyle Road Baptist Church (3510 Argyle Rd).  As usual we'll have our snack counter open so feel free to contribute a drink or something to munch on.  And feel free to bring along friends.

Feel free to use this thread to say if you're planning to attend and try and pre-arrange a game with others.

Hope to see you there,

Allan

Hey everyone,

For me, last week was very busy and writing the notification for December's Strategy Saturday kept slipping my mind.  So I told myself that I needed to get it out by Sunday.  Well, big surprise, I got a little distracted on Sunday and it was late when I remembered that I still needed to write my post.  I think that you can all sympathize that at that point of the day my mood was not up for it.  So here we are today writing up a late notification (all though, to be fair and to let myself off the hook a bit, I had given you all a heads up last month when this next Strategy Saturday was taking place).

Since it is the Christmas season, Strategy Saturday will be the first weekend this month (yes, I too, need to get shopping!).  So come out this December 4th at 7pm.  We'll be in the basement of Argyle Road Baptist Church (3510 Argyle Rd).  As usual we'll have our snack counter open so feel free to contribute a drink or something to munch on.  And feel free to bring along friends.

The feature game this month will be 'Clippers', a game of establishing sailing/trading routes in the South Pacific during the age of the clipper sailing ships.  You can check it out at http://www.geekdo.com/boardgame/3128/clippers.

Also if you are planning to attend this weekend, consider posting on this thread.  You may even want to tell of a game that you're going to bring and see if there are others who may be interested in playing it as well.
Hope to see you there,

Allan

Hi everyone,

So this upcoming weekend is November's Strategy Saturday.  It will mark 6 years of Strategy Saturday and our 72nd games evening.  We won't be doing any special celebrate this time around (maybe we'll do something for the 75th Strategy Saturday in February - ideas anyone?) but still its a kind of hard to believe we've been going that long.

This month Guy Ouellette has be good enough to agree to run the Feature Game.  He'll be teaching "Himalaya" a game of collecting aquatic monsters on the planet Venus.  Actually I haven't played this game yet so I just made that last bit up.  The title makes it clear that there is a mountain theme and judging from the BoardGameGeek website it must be pretty good as it was nominated for some very prestigious awards.

As usual, we'll be getting together from 7pm-midnight in the basement of Argyle Road Baptist Church (3510 Argyle Rd).  Again we'll have our snack counter open so feel free to contribute a drink or something to munch on.  And feel free to bring along friends.

Hope to see you there,

Allan

PS - Our December edition of Strategy Saturday will be a weekend earlier on December 4th.  It is our tradition to have it early in the Christmas season as things get pretty hectic for everyone this time of the year.

Hi everyone,

Strategy Saturday is coming up this Thanksgiving Weekend.  Usually we postpone it a week but this year I'll be in Calgary at FallCon.  So October the 9th it is.

My offer is still open to anyone who would like to feature a game from their collection.  We almost had a Feature Game demoed by someone other then me, but it didn't work out this month.  Hopefully next month.  So with that said I've taken a look into my collection for something that isn't too long and decided on Havoc .  This is a cool card game that re-creates the 100 Years War between England and France based around a poker mechanic (BUT it's not poker!  :D).

Allan

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the late notice about this coming Strategy Saturday.  Stuff happens.  However, despite what may all be going on there is no denying that this weekend is the second weekend of September so it's time for another edition of Strategy Saturday.

I have a number of announcements to make:

1.  The Feature Game is going to be ... (drum roll - oh, and don't hold your breath Dwayne) ... Brass!  Besides the fact that I love this game there is another reason why I'm featuring it yet again.  Next month I'll be moderating it at FallCon in Calgary and I need to brush up on my teaching it.  So if you've never had a chance to play this gem be sure to contact me since there is only room for 4 players (unless of course one of our other attendees has a good heart and brings another copy).

2.  Next month the second Saturday falls on Thanksgiving weekend.  Usually we bump Strategy Saturday to the following weekend when it comes to holidays.  However the following weekend I'll be at FallCon, then the weekend after that is FRAG's Games Day and the last weekend is Hallowe'en.  So that means we'll be running Strategy Saturday on Thanksgiving weekend after all, on October 9th.  I hope you can make it.

3.  I send out a monthly email just to remind people of the upcoming Strategy Saturday.  If you'd like the convenience of receiving a quick reminder in you Inbox (usually around a week in advance), just drop me a PM and include your name and email, and I'll happily put you on my mailing list.

My offer is still open to anyone who would like to feature a game from their collection.  Contact me if your interested.

Allan

STRATEGY SATURDAY VENUE INFORMATION

Description
Strategy Saturday started in the fall of 2004 and is a once a month evening of board games.  It is generally held the second Saturday of each month.  Sometimes the date moves around a bit due to the facility being unavailable that weekend, it being a holiday weekend, or the organizers being simply unavailable.  That all said, it still is generally the second Saturday of the month.

Also, we are always encourage others run the Feature Game with one of their own games.  Maybe it's a new game you just got and can't wait to try it out or its a old favourite that just doesn't see the light of day like it should.  PM me and I'll be happy to see what arrangements we can make.
