Archive of Leagues / Warhammer Fantasy Winter League 2014-15
« on: October 21, 2014, 04:03:23 PM »
Important General League Info

After completing another successful ComicReader Escalation League we will be continuing the momentum by starting another Warhammer Fantasy Winter League 2014-15 for Regina and area.  This winter league will start Nov 2014 and will go until the end of Feb 2015.  This league is designed to promote friendly sportsmanship and to encourage all Warhammer players to have fun. Everyone here is playing to have fun, and it is important that each player, win or loss, has an enjoyable experience.  This league is independent of ComicReaders Downtown but is still supported by them by way of prizes and gaming space.

League Rules:

Sign up by indicating your name and contact info below.  Please indicate which Warhammer army(ies) you intend to be using in this league. (You are not limited to one army.) Please pay $5 to join the league (cash only). This money is collected by ComicReaders and will be distributed back in the form of league prizes.

Rule set
Rule set used, in general, will be the 8th Edition Rules of Warhammer Fantasy (2010) with the Nagash update.  All current errata published by Games Workshop apply.  Players are free to experiment with additional rules that they agree upon.  Or they are free to exclude rules they wish to remove (However, this should be discussed in advance!)  An example of this might be to try out the Nagash underground battle rules, Nagash Narrative Battle or the new lore available to all armies ‘the Lore of the Undeath’.

Army / Army Lists
Each player is free to move between armies and prepare a new army list for each battle. To be fair keep in mind that:
1) your opponent should be told which army you intend to use sometime before the battle
2) a player should prepare a single army list for that battle and have it at the battle
3) a player should have pre chosen magic lores for all wizards at the time the army list is created (p134, Warhammer basic rulebook)
4) just prior to the game, it is proper game-play to inform your opponent about the intricacies of your army. This includes pointing out each unit and their basic rules, which ones have commands, all heroes and lords, and any specific rules about your chosen race that they might not be familiar with. You DO NOT have to go over specific magical items or hidden gits like assassins or fanatics.

Nagash, The End Times, changes Warhammer army composition.  Nagash allows up to: 50% Lords, 50% Heros, 50% special and up to 25% rare.  The rule set remains with minimum 25% core. Feel free to try this composition out and report your experiences!  UPDATE: As of Oct22, 2014, Nagash, End Times book has become the standard for GW rules.  You can see and read the errata here:  http://www.blacklibrary.com/faqs-and-errata.html

Army list size
A standard game can be played at 2500 points, unless you and your opponent agree to a different point amount.

Scenarios
Scenarios should be rolled as outlined on page 140 of the current Basic Warhammer Rule book. Other scenarios are acceptable as long as agreed upon by both sides.  For example: Try those Nagash Narrative Battles!

Terrain
D6+4 pieces of terrain as outlined in the Basic Warhammer Rule book unless agreed upon differently.

Where to Play
You may play your League games anywhere. ComicReaders Downtown has made available gaming space for Warhammer on Wed and Thurs nights.  You can also contact the store to see if other days are available.

Points, Prizes and Reporting Games
Please report each game that you play by posting in this forum.  Massacre win (5pts), regular win(4pts), draw (3pts), loss (2pts), massacre loss (1pts) and the league player you played are vital info to include as I will keep track of points.  If you play someone outside the league you earn 1 point maximum for each game played against someone outside the league (but bonus points can still be added).  A bonus of 1 point can be earned by: playing at ComicReaders or using a fully painted army.  When reporting the game adding details about the game would be great, particularly if you’re using any of the new Nagash rules!  The points are accumulatively over the four months.  But the points are not really why we play this game.  We play for fun so I am only keeping track for fun and personal interest.  The winner of the league will win bragging rights only... not necessarily the prizes!

A prize will be awarded each month in a draw.  Each time you play a game vs a league player you will be entered into the monthly draw.  In addition a single bonus entry can be obtained once per month by playing at least one game at ComicReaders.  (see example below for detailed illustration, separate post below)

The prizes come from your league fees in the form of gift certificates for ComicReaders Downtown.  ComicReaders Downtown has also agreed to top-up each entry by an additional $5.  Since the number of players indicated how much money we have for prizes I can’t say how much the prizes will be at this time.  I suspect that we will have monthly prizes of about $25 to be used on anything in the store.

ComicReaders Downtown
A special thanks to ComicReaders Downtown for providing gaming space as well as doubling our league fees!  And a special thanks to ComicReader staff that will have to put up with us.

Edited:  Oct 26 - Under Rule Set, updated to add GW Errata link for Nagash rules.  These rules have become the official GW rule set

Archive of Leagues / Warhammer Fantasy Ladder League (winter 2013/14)
« on: November 03, 2013, 11:44:45 PM »
General overview:  Warhammer is the table top game of fantasy battles using miniature models players have built and painted.  To support the game we are starting our second Warhmmer Fantasy ladder league.  Anyone that might be interested in joining it is welcome to do so.  Players accumulate points by playing the games or can use challenges to advance themselves to the top of the ‘ladder’. A small $5 fee per player will be collected for prizes.  The league will run for 3 months with a month for finals.  This league is run independent of recent ComicReaders Warhammer Fantasy escalation leagues and all former rules.  However, this league is still supported by ComicReaders but way of gift certificates and gaming space.  Thanks ComicReaders!

Getting Started:
The official sign up period will be now until Nov 30.  Please join the league at any time by posting your name and the army that you wish to use.  There is a minimal charge of $5 and this will go to prizes at the end of the league.  ComicReaders is collecting the league fees so please drop off your money there.  Note that it must be cash, not debit or check or anything like that.

Players must choose one army to play for the duration of the ladder league unless playing in a special event (special event details below).  Players can change army lists and game point values from game to game.  When both sides agree, players may also choose to play scenarios from the book, special scenarios from the big book, 3+ player mega-battle, a siege, etc.  It is suggested that players try to build up to, and play games at the 2500pt using the basic rulebook’s army composition.

Location: Games can be played at any location.  ComicReaders Downtown has offered up room in their store.  Space is generally available during store hours with the exception of Friday evening and Saturday.  Call in advance to book a spot if you’re playing at the store during those times.  Players earn +2 bonus points per game played in this location.

Point structure:
League points are earned by playing games.  "Victory points" are gained for playing against league players.  Victory Points = A crushing victory yields 8-2, victory 6-3 and a tie 4-4.  The players can also earn bonus point by: playing a fully painted army +1, ladder challenge battle +1, or playing at ComicReaders Downtown +2.  Players will receive a cumulative -1 point for each game that they play the same person to a minimum of 2.  Points accumulate with the first and second highest point scores determine who will make it to the playoffs.  Special Event:  We will try to plan one special event per league.  Currently this special event is unplanned.  When playing in the special event players receive a bonus of 2pts for participating, plus any additional victory/bonus points they earn.  Players may play any army that they choose for this special event and still receive credit as if they were playing their ladder league army.

In order to further promote the spirit of increased game play, players that play matches involving non league members will still benefit from game count and will receive 2 points for the league.  In addition, players that command a different army from their chosen army will also get 2 points for each game played.

THE LADDER:
The ladders system was invented to by Scott Radom and used by Ravaging Hordes in Saskatoon.  It seems to work so we will borrow it.  It is designed to level the playing field between players that can get lots of games in and gamers that can’t.  Here is how it works:  Once per month a player can issue a challenge to someone up to three positions higher on the ladder.  If the challenge is successfully won by the challenger, the player would then move to their spot.  The player that accepted the challenge, but lost, would move down one spot.  In the special case that the first place person was challenged and lost, they will move down 2 spots.  In addition, each person has a single ‘wild card’ challenge that they can use to challenge anyone above them in the standings regardless of position.  Please make it clear to both players that a ladder challenge has been issued by posting it online and posting it in advance of the game!  The challenge can be played at any agreed point value and in any location.  Inactive players fall to the bottom of the ladder any month they do not play at least one game (Dec/Jan/Feb).

League Final:
The top two players on the ladder and the top two in points makes it into the semifinals.  If player(s) are at the top of both the ladder and Points sides of the league, players on the ladder will be bumped into the semifinal games. Semifinals: The top ladder will play the second place in points.  The top points will play the second place on the ladder.  Semi finals must be played between March 1-20.  Finals: The winners of the semifinal games will playoff for the league winner.  The final game will be held between March 21-31 - or before if players agree.  Games will be played at 2500pts unless there are circumstances that you can't play at that point level.  If any games end in a draw the player with the most games played will be declared the victor.

Prizes:  ComicReaders will be matching dollar for dollar your league fees.  This will be returned back in the form of a gift certificate for anything in their store.  All league fees are returned back to the league players.  First place will get $40 gift card at ComicReaders.  Second place will get $30.  We will make a random draw for the remaining money with the players that didn't claim a prize.  This random draw will be capped at $30.  A second draw will occur if there is money left in the pool.

Reporting All battles need to be reported in this forum so that I can keep track and up-to-date.  Remember to count all the "victory points" as we have to distinguish between crushing victory or just victory.  Also take note if people's armies are painted (typically 3 different colours, each model).  The league is self policing so play fair and report accurately.  Please report battles promptly, thanks!

Other than that everyone just needs to have fun and play fair!

A big thanks to ComicReaders for their help with supplying gift certificates, gaming room and collection of the league fees.

Edited:  Distinguished between Victory points and bonus points.
Edited:  Dec 20 - updated 'League Final' and 'Prizes'

Don and I are talking about running another 'player' league after this one raps up.  No details yet!

Having said that; What would interest everyone for a league format?  Would you like an excalation league?  What point value?

Here's an opportunity to voice out what you feel would make a great league!

Keep in mind "the other guy" when you post your thoughts.  Meaning, what would be best, overall, for the gaming group that we have?  I'm very interested to hear other thoughts on this as I certainly have my own. :D

If you would like to put in your  :2cents for the next player league you can have your say now!

Archive of Leagues / Warhammer Fantasy Ladder League (spring, 2013)

General overview:  Warhammer is the game of fantasy battles using miniture models players have built and painted.  To support the game we are starting a new Warhmmer Fantasy ladder league.  Anyone that might be interested in joining it is welcome to do so.  Players accumulate points by playing the games or can use challenges to advance themselves to the top of the ‘ladder’ league.  When the league is wrapping up the top point and ladder players will duke it out to see who is the winner.  A small fee will be collected for prizes.  There will be a "door prize" just for playing in the league as well as prizes for the winner and runner up.  This league is run independent of recent ComicReaders Warhammer Fantasy escalation leagues and all former rules.  However, this league is still supported by ComicReaders but way of gift certificates and gaming space.  This league ends in 3-4 months conveniently just before ComicReaders starts their next Warhammer Fantasy Escalation League!   The exact date the league comes to a close is June 30, with playoffs in July.

Getting Started:  The official sign up period will be March 15-April 15.  Please join the league at any time by posting your name and the army that you wish to use and I will add you to the list.  There is a minimal charge of $5 and this will go to prizes at the end of the league.  ComicReaders is collecting the league fees so please drop off your money in cash.  Note that it must be cash, not debit or check or anything like that.  Alternatively you can give your fee to Robert to hand in for you.

Players must choose one army to play for the duration of the ladder league unless playing in a special event (special event details below).  Players can change army lists and game point values from game to game.  When both sides agree, players may also choose to play scenarios from the book, special scenarios from the big book, pitched battles, Storm of Magic, run a mini campaign, a mega-battle, a siege, etc.  It is suggested that players try to build up to, and play games at the 2500pt using the basic rulebook’s army composition.  League finals will be suggested to be played at 2500pts.

Location: Games can be played at any location.  ComicReaders Downtown has offered up room in their store.  Space is generally available during store hours with the exception of Friday evening and Saturday.  Call in advance to book a spot if you’re playing at the store.

Point structure: League points are earned by playing games.  A crushing victory yields 8-2, victory 6-3 and a tie 4-4.  The players can also earn a bonus point by: playing a fully painted army +1, ladder challenge battle +1, or playing at ComicReaders Downtown +1.  Players will receive a cumulative -1 point for each game that they play the same person to a minimum of 2.  Players are also awarded 2 league points for every tournament battle or special event that they attend.  (This season’s special event is FRAGCON running May 3-5).  Players may play any army that they choose for this special event and still receive credit as if they were playing their ladder league army.  Points accumulate with the first and second highest point scores determine who will make it to the playoffs.

In order to further promote the spirit of increased game play, players that play matches involving non league members will still benefit from game count and will receive 2 points for the league.  In addition, players that command a different army from their chosen army will also get 2 points for each game played.

THE LADDER:   The ladders system was invented to by Scott Radom and is designed to level the playing field between those that can play lots and those that can play minimum number of games.  It seems to be working well for the Ravagign Hordes league in Saskatoon so we will borrow it.  Here is how it works:  Once per month a player can issue a challenge to someone up to three positions higher on the ladder.  If the challenge is successful the players would then exchange positions.  (Note: points are not lost or given up in this way only ladder position).   In addition, each person has a single ‘wild card’ challenge that they can use to challenge anyone above them in the standings regardless of position.  Please make it clear to both players that a ladder challenge has been issued.  The challenge can be played at any agreed point value and in any location.  Inactive players fall to the bottom of the ladder any month they do not play at least one game (excluding March).

League Final: The two highest point totals and the two highest ranking players on the ladder will face off to see who will win the league.  Basically 1st place points plays second place ladder and 2nd place points plays first place ladder.  The winners then face off against each other.  In the event the playoff game played is a draw then the number of games played in the league will be used to break the tie.  The league playoff games will be scheduled by you at your convenience.  It is strongly suggested to play at 2500pts.

Prizes:  The prizes are divided with 40% going to the winner, 30% going to 2nd place and 30% going in a random draw to a third player that meet the minimum eligibility AND whom didn't win 1st or 2nd.  To be eligible for prizes 4 games minimum need to be played.  Also league fees of $5 must be paid up in advance of draw.  ComicReaders has agreed to double all league fees so the prizes will be gift certificates to their store! Thanks ComicReaders!  (Note: the gift certificate can be used for any product in their store, at their price.  THIS is not the GW credit from previous leagues).

Reporting All battles need to be reported in this forum so that I can keep track and up-to-date.  Remember to count all the victory points as we have to distinguish between crushing victory or just victory.  Also take note if people's armies are painted (typically 3 different colours).  The league is self policing so play fair and report accurately.  Please report battles promptly, thanks!

Other than that everyone just needs to have fun and play fair!

A big thanks to ComicReaders for their help with supplying gift certificates, gaming room and collection of the league fees.

Edited:  March 20/21, major revisions to most paragraphs.  Updated the ladder, prizes, league fees, etc

Warhammer Fantasy Escalation League season 1.5 will be drawing to a close with the final on March 10.  Comic Readers will be switching gears to support 40K for a few months, before starting another Fantasy escalation league.  However, some people have expressed interest in continuing with a fantasy league between mid-March and the start of the next Comic Readers league.  Don Matwe and Dean Dodge have suggested that they could be the league DM.  I created this topic to gather ideas from players who want to contribute to the building of the rules for this purposed Player League. I really like some of the suggestions that I heard so far (mainly ideas from Don).  I will post my take on his ideas and I will perhaps add some input of my own.  Idea suggestions:

1) Points for all games played count.  Players would earn points for playing league member for the first time, playing someone multiple times or even playing non-league members.  A point scale can be used to reward someone more points for playing a league member, over a non-league member, etc.  The goal with such a rule would be to encourage the maximum number of games.

2) Ladder points; once a month each person has the option to challenge someone higher up in the standings.  If they win the challenge they take their opponents points and switch places.  I really like a rule like this because it can level the playing field between the player who can play often and the player that can only play occasionally.

3) Encourage painting with bonus points for painted armies.  Example: This could be a monthly Xpt bonus or perhaps a +1pt per game played.

4) Keeping some structure: I would like to see players keep the same army for the months of the league. I would like to see lists remain the same for a month but to have the freedom to change their lists from one month to the next.  I suggest we play at 2500pts.

5) I would suggest a minimum fee.  The fee would go to prizes for the league end.  Additionally charging a fee usually keeps people a little bit more engaged when they have something invested.  I would suggest a minimum fee of $10/player.

6) I would like to feel like the league has a home base.  I would encourage the league GM (that is not me) to talk to a local gaming store to see if something could be arranged between the league and the store.

7) Playing at the store is great but not everyone likes that.  I suggest that the league allow play at different venues to maximize the number of players in the league and games played each month.  (Example: People's houses, FRAGcon, etc)
