Post by: dafish on September 28, 2010, 10:51:00 PM
So Wojo pitch it before,so how about it? Anyone intested in playtesing instead of EDH Oct 7 for Sat? Even proxy up anything you don't have, but think it will be good and bring it!

For people that have no interest in States, we should still play EDH that night.

Agreed. I'd like to help, but since I don't see myself playing standard in the near future, I'd rather just play EDH. There's lots of space ^.^

I'll be there, probably early.

I need a couple of Renegade Dopplegangers if anyone has any they can trade, sell, or lend. I've been messing around at home with my Dredgevine build and I think I like the Dopplegangers over Lotus Cobras so Tempest, I don't think I'll need to borrow those.

we have dopplegangers for you wade as I doubt either fish or I will play Dredgevine.

You should check out http://www.starcitygames.com/magic/standard/20208_Flow_of_Ideas_The_New_Face_of_Fauna_Shaman_Darkvine.html (http://www.starcitygames.com/magic/standard/20208_Flow_of_Ideas_The_New_Face_of_Fauna_Shaman_Darkvine.html)
for a more inventive dredgevine list.

Looks like a neat list.

I think I'm gonna stick with what I got for now, though. I like the Ooze shenanigans and I've spent the last week putting together what I have so I don't really want to change the gameplan without even playing it a bit. I think I'm gonna experiment around with Shaman/Vengevine decks for the next little while so I'll have to give that list a try sometime soon.

After a crapload of goldfishing at home I'm finding that most of the time mana seems like it'll be fairly stable so I don't feel I need the Cobras. I'm going to play with 1 or 2 Sylvan Rangers instead, I think.

What are you and Fish thinking of running Wojo?  Just want to make sure we have a good gauntlet for testing.  I assume you'll have a U/W build with you.  Should I build and bring a ramp deck?  Seems like they will be popular, but what style specifically?  Mono G Eldrazi?   Titan Force?  Valakut?  I plan on bringing a mono G Elf deck, and an updated Boros list I've been tinkering with...also have a Mono B list I'd like to try out, though I've been contemplating adding U to it, but I think that would require dropping Mind Sludges from the list, which would be unfortunate as I think it's a house against both U/W and Ramp.  What about Mono R?  Chapin had a list in his premium article yesterday that used Koth and Lux Cannoin along with proliferate shenanigans that seems crappy but could have some incredibly busted draws.

I see we're thinking along similar lines then...so we're either on the right track or all completely out to lunch :P

What time we planning on meeting up?

I'll be at comic readers a little after 4:30. fish gets off work at 5:30ish so he'll be much latter.

If you're referring to Saturday then I think that leaving town at 6:30 is the best bet.

Sweet. I was originally going to stay the weekend and visit family, but they're gonna be busy so I had to change plans.

I'll pop in around 4:30 or 5 tomorrow.

If anyone needs to borrow anything, let me know, and I'll see what I can do. I'll be popping in around a bit later Thursday and/or Friday if it's not too late.

Sweet another person playing ramp, one of my aggro decks should do good.

How'd everyone do?
Title: Re: Playtestin' for Provincials

I did pretty horrible. As far as Vengevine decks go Dredgevine doesn't seem to be good enough. Wojo made top 8 with U/W, Morty went top 4 with RDW. The finals were the U/W control mirror.

I'm sure it was the deck.

I'm sure it was the deck.

It was definately the deck I saw the most. Plenty of ramp. A decent amount of RDW/Boros and Mono-Black Control.

I think he means dredgevine might not be as bad as you think. I haven't examined standard enough lately to have a formal opinion, but I think it can have a decent matchup against the ramp decks, and maybe control? However, it can be a bit trickier to play than your standard aggro deck.

The main problem was that it just relied on luck too much. Hedron Crab can whiff pretty bad, and did whiff pretty bad often. Shaman becomes the only reliable way to get the engine going, but every smart player simply got rid of it immediately, especially anyone playing red or black. It's very easy to slow the deck down enough to keep it from exploding. Every so often it gets a nice break and lets you attack for 8 or 12 in the first few turns, but it can't do it consistently. Ooze shenanigans are fun but again, it's not that hard to disrupt. I think as far as Vengevine decks go, other color combinations have better tools and can be more consistent. This version is too slow against aggro, not as consistent as the ramp decks, and can't compete with UW Control's toolset.

Regardless of the color combination, Nihil Spellbomb looks like a serious problem for Vengevine decks. It pretty much shut me down completely whenever someone boarded it in. Even worse considering the deck's backup plan(the ooze) also depends on the graveyard.
