Hi everyone,

March is here and that means ... the start of a New Year! Well, maybe not here in Canada, but if we were to go back to the time of the Romans this would be true. March was when the Romans would begin their military campaigns and so they marked it as the beginning of their new year. The Roman calendar still echos into ours today (hint: September, October, November, December) and in remembrance of this, the Feature Game this month will have a military theme.

The game for March will be a classic of Ameritrash, Shogun. Released in 1986, and subsequently republished under a couple of different names, Shogun focuses on the chaotic feudal society of Japan during the Middle Ages. Players play one of several factions that erupt into a civil war, trying to consolidate their strongholds and then defeat other armies for the right to be called Shogun, the supreme ruler.

Of course, as always, there will be many other games available to be played.

!!! If you have a game you'd like to play and draw some attention to, feel free to volunteer for future Feature Game slots. Just drop me a note at feature_friday@hotmail.com.

Feature Friday meets at Southside Pentecostal Assembly (41 Birchwood Rd) from 7pm to midnight. There is parking and an entrance at the back of the building. A snack table will be set up so feel free to contribute a drink or something to munch on. And feel free to bring along friends (and to forward this invite).

Hope you'll be there,

Allan

Hello all,

March is already here. Well, not actually, but you would be forgiven if you thought so from the weather outside :D. However, what will be coming in March is the theatrical release of the second installment of Denis Villeneuve's adaption of Frank Herbert's Dune.

So anticipation of the movie's upcoming release, February's Feature Game will be Dune: Imperium - Uprising (also a sequel). Dune: Imperium Uprising is a standalone spinoff to Dune: Imperium that expands on that game's blend of deck-building and worker placement. In Dune: Imperium Uprising, you want to continue to balance military might with political intrigue, wielding new tools in pursuit of victory. Spies will shore up your plans, vital contracts will expand your resources, or you can learn the ways of the Fremen and ride mighty sandworms into battle!

If you own, the first release of Dune: Imperium, and and are open to teaching it to other's, bring it out. I personally don't own this release, but I've played it and it's very enjoyable. It would be great if there is more than one table of Dune: Imperium being played.

And if you don't think Dune is your cup-of-tea, as always, there will be many other games available to be played.

Happy New Year All!

2024 has arrived and with it the anticipation of new and continuing relationships. Many have found that sitting at a table and playing a game is a great way to build up friendships. It is why Feature Friday exists. Come join us on the third Friday of each month and let's get to know each other.

For the first game to be spotlighted in 2024, we have Le Havre. Released in 2008, this game is still recognized as a very solid design worthy of its ranking in the top 100 games on BGG. In Le Havre, players establish a supply chain by collecting resources, building industries, and shipping in the French city of the same name. As resources become available players may choose either to take all goods of one type from an offer space or to use one of the available buildings. Building actions allow players to upgrade goods, sell them or use them to build their own buildings and ships. The goal is by game's end to have amassed the largest fortune.

Of course, as always, there will be many other games available to be played.

Happy holidays all,

This Christmas, Ridley Scott has brought the person of Napoleon back into the public eye with his major movie release of the same name. While the movie seems destined to be of minimal consequence, the same can not be said of actual man. His life has had a major impact on the shape of our world, even stretching here to North America. In 1803, Napoleon sold 530 million acres of land west of the Mississippi River, now known as the Louisiana Purchase, to the USA for $15 million. US President Thomas Jefferson then decided to send two explorers – Meriwether Lewis and William Clark – to take inventory of this great expanse.

In Lewis and Clark: The Expedition, each player manages an expedition intended to cross the North American continent. Their goal is to be the first to reach the Pacific. Each one has his own Corps of Discovery that will be completed by the Native Americans and the trappers met during the journey. He has to cleverly manage his characters and also the resources he finds along the way. Beware, sometimes frugality is better than abundance.

Of course, as always, there will be many other games available to be played.

Hi everyone,

November brings the cold reality, that yup, winter - again. :-\  But that just means that indoor activities get that much better! :D

For all those who still have a kid inside them, who liked smashing their toys, playing guns, all accompanied with constant sound effects, this month's Feature Game is sure to please. Thunder Road Vendetta is a smash-up derby Mad Max style for up to 4 players. Each player has three cars with which to out-race, out-last, and out-luck their opponents to win a race set in a dystopian landscape. Cars careen, cars shoot, cars crash, cars launch, and you'll have a great time laughing at the ridiculousness of it all. And the rules are so easy - roll the dice and do what they say. If you already have a copy of this game, bring it out so as many as possible can enjoy the laughs that are sure to happen.

Of course, if this seems a little low-brow ( ;) )and you think you might be into another game (or you're just a little late ), as always, there will be many other games available to be played.

Hi everyone,

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving enjoying time spent with family and eating good food. The weather was fantastic. It's too bad that autumn is such a short season; it really is a great time of the year.

The Feature Game for October is going to be a little known but really good area control game called Kreta. Players use different character cards to bring in and move pieces around the Greek island of Crete so as to give them influence in the provinces on the island. Each player has an identical set of characters, and each character controls certain pieces which have different abilities and limitations in the game. By smart use of characters and clever timing, players try to have the scoring occur when they have the most influence in a region so as to gain more VPs than their opposition.

Kreta is a special game for me. It was one of the first area-control games I ever played but more importantly, it was the vehicle that led me making some great friends. Of course, as always, this is just one of the games that will be available to be played.

Hi everyone,

Labour Day is here (and done) and that means summer is over and we all are looking to get back to a more 'normal' routine. Due to September 1st being a Friday, our games evening will come a bit quicker this month - the 3rd Friday is in less than 2 weeks.

The Feature Game will be the #1 Ranked game on the Board Game Geek website, Brass: Birmingham. This is a sequel to Martin Wallace's fantastic game Brass: Lancashire (one of my favourites). Brass: Birmingham continues the story of competing entrepreneurs in the region surrounding Birmingham during the English industrial revolution, between the years of 1770-1870. As in its predecessor, players will seek to develop, build, and establish industries and networks in an effort to exploit low or high market demands. Familiar industries such as cotton mills, coal mines, iron works, canals, and railroads make their return in addition to new ventures of potteries, factories, and breweries. All this is played out on a gorgeous map which is sure to add to the experience of both new and old players alike.

Hi everyone,

"I'm late!! I'm Late!! I'm LATE!! For a very important date!!" to quote a crazy rabbit.
So yes, despite my tardy posting, Feature Friday August Edition is still taking place. THIS Friday is the 3rd Friday of the month and that means is a games evening. Hope you're still able to join us.

The Feature Game will be Pillars of the Earth. This game is inspired by a well known novel of the same title. In the game, players are seeking to out contribute each other in the building of a medieval cathedral through the recruiting of artisans, workers, and materials.  It's an older game now but is still considered by many to be one of the best examples of a game with the 'worker placement' game mechanic. It is a good looking game that is relatively easy to learn and offers some challenging game play.

Take note that we will be meeting in the old gym portion of the building.

Hi everyone,

For July's edition of Feature Friday, take note that we will be meeting in the old gym portion of the building as the church has begun some repair work in the room we have been meeting in.

This month's feature game is Valley of the Kings. Take on the role of Egyptian nobles at the time of the pharaohs, preparing for death and burial in the Valley of the Kings. Players want to fill their tombs with food, canopic jars, statues, amulets and other treasures, and to do so they acquire cards that are laid out in the shape of a pyramid; purchase cards at the base of the pyramid, and it "crumbles" to bring cards higher in the pyramid to the base where they can be bought. The pyramid resets each round with new offerings. You score only for cards that you remove from your deck and stash in your tomb, so if you keep using valuable cards for their effects and don't entomb them before the game ends, you could lose out on big points! Whoever collects the most valuable artifacts in her tomb wins.

Hi everyone,

June is here and although it's not 'official' summer has come along with it.

June's feature game is Puerto Rico, another that has been popular ever since it was released and still ranks in the top 50 games on the BoardGameGeek website. In Puerto Rico, players assume the roles of colonial governors on the island of Puerto Rico. The aim of the game is to amass victory points by shipping goods to Europe or by constructing buildings. Players grow crops which they exchange for points or doubloons. Doubloons can then be used to buy buildings, which allow players to produce more crops or give them other abilities. Buildings and plantations do not work unless they are manned by colonists.
